Microfiction: Ghost Stories

 Never Knew I Died

My entire life has been a series of disappointments. I never have expectations and I always end up being disappointed. I never feel like I am seen or heard, no one pays any mind to me. I feel invisible like I could walk through walls. My parents treat me like a missing person but I have been right in front of their eyes all along, they cry for me every night, but I never left. They talk about me in the past tense, I never understood why. They aren't happy on my birthday, and they never buy me any toys anymore. They took all of my things and boxed them up and hid them in the attic. It's not fair, they treat me like a ghost.

A Terrible Costume

This year for Halloween I want to go as something I have never been before. We often wear costumes of the things we fear, the things that we want to be, or the things we could only imagine in our worst nightmare. This year, with the collection of sexy nurses and spooky zombies, I want to be something never before seen. I want to carve a bright smile, match it with some clown makeup, and wear my best dress. I want to shock the world and the little old ladies who will hand me a single "fun-sized" snickers bar. I want to take off my mask and scare the masses. This year for Halloween I am going to be happy.

Authors Note:

In light of this being October 1st, I wanted to write some scary stories. Given more time I would certainly expand upon these two stories, but I wanted to create a sense of Halloween with a twist. For the first story, I imagine a child who has passed away to unknown circumstances that have come back as a ghost that haunted their parents because they do not know that they have died. For the second story, I wanted to take a "Joker" approach and write a story about someone who carves a big smile onto their mouth and goes from door to door as a happy person. Although neither of these stories is entirely original, I had a lot of fun imagining these two scenarios.

  1. Hi Mikayla!
First, I want to say great job on these two microfiction stories! They might be my favorites so far! I thought they were clever, engaging, and just in time for the spooky season! The first one was sad because the ghost obviously doesnt know but thats what makes it clever too! It reminds me of sixth sense, it is a great movie if you have yet to see it!

  2. Hi Mikayla! As someone who loves Halloween and the fall season, I really loved your microfictions! I actually watched the movie "A Ghost Story" this week, so I decided to click on your story when I saw that was used as the image. I think it's so fascinating to look at ghosts from this perspective, where their humanity is still intact even though they are dead. This was a really cool entry!

Introduction to a Women's Wrestling Coach and Future Teacher

Introduction to a Women's Wrestling Coach and Future Teacher     Hey everyone! My name is Mikayla Chandler. I am a secondary language arts education major going into my senior year here at OU. In addition to being a full-time student, I am also in my first year of coaching wrestling. Although I am a coach on a team of boys and girls, I primarily focus on my attention on the ladies on the team. Although I chose to not wrestling in college, I spent the majority of my life around wrestling and was competitive from ages 10 to 18. I was born and raised here in Norman, so it has always been a dream of mine to obtain a degree from OU. I have one dog but would certainly love to get more. Her name is Verona and she is a Lab/Pitbull mix that showed up one day and never left. One of my major interests is in American Sign Language; I took two years in college and I wish I could afford to take more classes. I love knowing another language, it makes me feel more connected to the world. I just

Week Four Story: The Bridge

The bridge between the Mainland and Lanka is a magical sight. This is Rama's bridge. Although it has been thousands of years since the creation of the bridge connecting the two regions, the bridge is still used by many. People say it used to connect what is now Sri Lanka and India, the gorgeous limestone meets the rock and the earth so wonderfully. It is mostly a tourist spot now, but peoples say that the rocky islands were constructed by Nala, son of  Vishwakarman , the "divine artisan," in order to allow enemies to cross the ocean. This was allegedly demanded by the God of Ocean to keep things fair and reasonable. This small series of islands that create a land bridge between the two countries serves a special purpose in my life, however. I grew up along this land bridge, and I know more secrets of the bridge than many. I know what wars have been fought and won because of this bridge. I know of what Rama and Sita faced during the creation of this bridge, and the p
