Time Management Stategies

Yay! Final blog of the week! What an exciting time to have completed my last first week of school work! This is relevant because this blog is about time management. This is something that I am sorely lacking, personally. Back in HS it felt so easy to take on the world. Looking back, I had school from 8am-4pm every day, took on a "zero" hour, AP classes, etc. I would run a mile or two every day before school, meaning that I am awake at 6am.  I went to wrestling practice for about 2 hours (depending on where we were at in the season) every single day, and on days that we didn't have duals, I would go to work until 10:30 as a server at IHOP. Then on weekends, if there wasn't a wrestling tournament, I was working doubles and putting in time at the gym. Even when we were not in wrestling season, I was still doing Freestyle wrestling, Competitive speech, and debate, and did musicals every year of HS. When the heck did I have time for homework? I do not know if I just had

Course Technology

As I have said several times before, having taken this course previously, I know about a lot of the technology that is used in the class. I still have the same tune-ups on my computer as I did from the past semester. Since there are really no first impressions here for me, I will just write about how much of a game-changer it has been for me in my everyday writing and work to have the recommended tune-ups, browser add-ons, and software that Laura recommends. These are all very simple fixes that make a world of a difference for the average college student. I am not sure why, but I have never had a word count or spell check extension on my laptop... and I am an English major. I think taking this course has been incredibly beneficial to me as a preservice teacher going into a world of teaching that may very well go fully online. The world of education has been expanded to include online opportunities, and so I need to be ready for that. Overall, I really recommend that everyone take the

Assignments - First Impressions

Woohoo! I am closing in on the last day of my last first week of college! What a wonderful feeling. Anyways, with this course, I am fairly familiar with the layout and the course expectations. It is a lot less daunting the second time around, and things sure make a lot more sense. Of course, my only true experience with a class like this, is well, the other section of the course. I am mainly excited about the new content material. My favorite part about the course is how forgiving it is. There is a lot of margin for error, there are grace periods, and there is extra credit. There is always a way to make up a grade and improve our writing abilities. My favorite part of taking the course is that my grade wasn't necessary based upon the content of my writing, but Laura is especially concerned with ensuring that we are improving, even without the motivation of a grade. Something I am looking forward to trying in the future is getting ahead of the course. I noticed that some of my

Growth Mindset

Having taken this course before, this is not my first interaction with the idea of growth vs. a fixed mindset. Also being a preservice educator, this is something that we learn about regularly. I have certainly heard about Carole Dweck before, and have had several class discussions about her teachings and what her critics think. Personally, I lean towards a growth mindset as is, and every day I work harder to achieve a mentality that is conducive to growth. Although there are times that I have been stagnant in my beliefs, both in myself and of others, I am confident that living with a growth mindset is vital for success. As a coach and a future teacher, I must be accommodating to my students and my athletes, I must be continually growing and changing with the times to ensure the success of my students. Even since the last time I took the mythology and folklore section of this class I have done a lot of growing. I have learned new things about myself, how I learn, and what I n

Introduction to a Women's Wrestling Coach and Future Teacher

Introduction to a Women's Wrestling Coach and Future Teacher     Hey everyone! My name is Mikayla Chandler. I am a secondary language arts education major going into my senior year here at OU. In addition to being a full-time student, I am also in my first year of coaching wrestling. Although I am a coach on a team of boys and girls, I primarily focus on my attention on the ladies on the team. Although I chose to not wrestling in college, I spent the majority of my life around wrestling and was competitive from ages 10 to 18. I was born and raised here in Norman, so it has always been a dream of mine to obtain a degree from OU. I have one dog but would certainly love to get more. Her name is Verona and she is a Lab/Pitbull mix that showed up one day and never left. One of my major interests is in American Sign Language; I took two years in college and I wish I could afford to take more classes. I love knowing another language, it makes me feel more connected to the world. I just
